Re:birth held at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, with more than 2,000 seated audiences. With flybar available, making full use of the venue was my top priority. Being head of lighting has its responsibilities and being one of the creative teams has its set of challenges. I had to take charge and be responsible for any problem rises and also lead my team on how the design takes place.

Working in the Sands Theatre is an achievement as it is one of the biggest venues in Singapore and being able to design lights in the theatre has its challenges such as having too much space and filling up the space. It takes a lot of thinking process and being able to design based on the show genre. Not only is the venue huge but also programming the lights based on the songs. The songs performed were in mandarin and being able to understand the songs based on the lyrics and instrumental has caused a lot of drawbacks in my planning.

There was only 1 rehearsal before bump-in and it was only a couple of hours long. I had to record and observe how the artist is going to be performed to have a gist of how to design the lights better. With the lighting model ‘Astera’ that came to be up and coming, I tried to infuse that light into my design and tried to incorporate it with the flybar. So I had the flybar flown down in between the performance with the lights itself. It is pretty cool honestly.

Re:birth happened during the Covid Season in March 2022. The hold backs of having meetings online has made communication harder and making sure the information is relayed. The planning of the show has been around for a year so making progress through web meetings and working from home has been a challenge. Nevertheless, the show was a success and the pillar between making planning and executing a concept has been remarkable.
